Now is the perfect time for a Strawberry Banana & Honey Smoothie! It’s the last week of June and the last few days of strawberry season, but the raspberries are right around the corner and after them, the blueberries and peaches will be ready. By now the first of the season’s honey will be extracted by beekeepers who practice progressive honey harvesting, making this a great time to test out honey smoothies with fresh Ontario fruit, and fresh Ontario dairy.
We are almost through the first month of summer in Ontario but it has already been a hot one, and where is the rain?? After the long, cold spring, I’m not complaining about the heat, but on hot sticky mornings, the last thing I want is to turn on an appliance and cook a hot breakfast. That’s where this smoothie comes in! My first honey harvest normally lands somewhere from mid to late June, right during strawberry season and I’m always up for a trip to my local dairy so this cold, refreshing smoothie full of local ingredients and produce is my go-to summer breakfast. The best part is that the fruit combination can be switched up to whatever is in season, letting you eat and enjoy local all summer long!
The key to making a delicious smoothie is using ripe and flavorful fruit. In Ontario, there’s an abundance of seasonal fruit throughout the summer months, so take advantage of it! Choose fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and peaches that are at their peak of ripeness and sweetness.
Investing in a high-quality blender can make a big difference in the texture and consistency of your smoothie. Look for a blender that has a powerful motor and can blend ice and frozen fruit easily.
To help your smoothie blend smoothly, you’ll need to add a liquid base. Choose a liquid that complements the flavors of your fruit. For example, if you’re using strawberries and raspberries, try adding almond milk or coconut water.
If your fruit isn’t quite sweet enough, you can add a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup. These will add sweetness without the refined sugars found in many store-bought smoothies.
Don’t forget the protein: Adding protein to your smoothie can help keep you full and satisfied. Try adding a scoop of protein powder or a spoonful of nut butter to your smoothie.
The beauty of smoothies is that you can customize them to your liking. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fruit combinations and flavor profiles until you find your perfect smoothie.
